SITE-BASED MENTORING
Although our Site-Based program typically takes place at our local schools, it's not limited to the classroom. Site-based matches can meet in the lunchroom, on the playground or after school program for about 1 hour per week! COMMUNITY-BASED MENTORING Some matches may spend time in the park, playing games or other fun activities! Others get together in the evenings. Each match is unique and develops a schedule that works for them! |

Help put "MEN" back in "mentoring!"
There is currently a greater need for male mentors. There many school-age boys are our waiting list who are waiting to be matched with a positive "big brother" in both our Community-Based and Site-Based Programs.
While our policy allows us to match Big Sisters with Little Brothers in our Site-Based program, a majority of the families have requested that their child be matched only with a Big Brother as there is a lack of positive male role models in their child's life. "Right now, we have 19 volunteers in the enrollment process and only 2 are male" says Melissa Ryan, BBBS Program Manager; "We really want to find Big Brothers for these boys who have been referred to the program". If you have ever considered being a volunteer Big Brother or Big Sister and can spare 1 hour per week, now is the perfect time to contact us to learn which program is right for you and your schedule! If you can be consistent, a good listener, like to have fun and have even just a little time to spare, you can be a Big! CLICK HERE TO BE A MENTOR TODAY! |
2020 Match of the yearEach year Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Johns County awards a BIG and a LITTLE as our Match of the Year. Those who are chosen for this award have demonstrated their commitment to making an impact in their LITTLE’s lives.
Our 2020 Match of the Year began their journey as BIG and LITTLE in our site based program in February 2017. Nick was in the third grade and had experienced unimaginable grief, a few years earlier. After we received the referral from his guidance counselor, we knew it would take a special BIG for Nick. After both Nick and Wayne had completed the enrollment process, it was determined that they in deed would be perfect for each other. The most important thing that Nick needed was normalcy and consistency in his young life. Wayne has provided that and more. He would visit Nick every week at school and the two of them found common interests in things like sports and music. Wayne has even brought his guitar to some visits and gave Nick some brief guitar lessons. Each year we submit our local nomination to the Big Brothers Big Sisters State Association of Florida for Big Brother and Big Sister of the year and this year, for the very first time, our BIG Brother Wayne was selected as Big Brother for the state of Florida. Their match has touched each of our staff in different ways and we are so thankful to be a part of it. Congratulations to both Wayne and Nick. |
